Conscious Dining – GRT Hotels Initiative to Offsets Food Carbon Emissions
Viruksham, in partnership with GRT Hotels & Radisson Blu GRT Chennai, has launched an innovative sustainability initiative that offsets the carbon footprint generated by hotel food operations through rural tree plantation.
This program converts everyday hospitality experiences—such as breakfast services, corporate events, and celebrations—into long-term environmental impact.
Each tree planted helps absorb approximately 20 kg of CO₂ annually, supporting climate action while improving rural livelihoods and biodiversity.
A simple breakfast. A growing forest.
Food Carbon Footprint in Hospitality
Food Carbon Footprint in Hospitality
The hospitality industry contributes significantly to global carbon emissions, particularly through:
- Food production and sourcing
- Processing and storage
- Transportation and logistics
- Cooking and service
- operations
- Food waste
These activities collectively generate a substantial food carbon footprint, making sustainability a critical priority for responsible hospitality brands.
Forward-thinking hotel groups are now integrating nature-based solutions to mitigate these environmental impacts.
Carbon Offset Through Tree Plantation
Carbon Offset Through Tree Plantation
Viruksham’s Food Carbon Footprint Offset Program enables hotels to offset their emissions by funding rural tree plantation programs.
Trees are planted in villages in collaboration with farmers, creating measurable environmental and social impact.
The plantation model focuses on:
- Native and climate-resilient tree species
- Fruit-bearing and economically beneficial trees
- Long-term ecological sustainability
This approach combines carbon sequestration, biodiversity restoration, and rural livelihood support into a single initiative.
How the Program Works

Food-related emissions from hotel operations are calculated based on operational data.
Tree Plantation
Trees are planted in rural villages in collaboration with farmers and community partners.
Certification
Participating hotels receive a Certificate of Conscious Dining acknowledging their carbon offset commitment.
